Getting married in Carinthia

The state of Carinthia is located in the south of Austria and is impressive due to its natural splendor, art, culture, cuisine and tradition. Thanks to its geographical location and natural features, Carinthia has unique places to say “I do”. Bride and groom can experience magical, unforgettable moments in Carinthia at any time of the year.

The lake-rich region of Carinthia (37 lakes in total) offers numerous, extraordinary celebration options:

  • Austria's only island hotel (4 stars) is located in the middle of Lake Faak. The idyllic island is wooded, rich in fauna and flora and car-free. The island can be reached around the clock with the hotel's own motorboat.
  • The wedding ship 'MS Porcia' on Lake Millstatt specializes in the most beautiful day of your life. The long-established family business offers complete arrangements and leaves nothing to be desired.

Romantic palaces and historic castles not only provide the most beautiful views, but also a perfect setting for weddings:

  • The Schlossvilla Miralago in Pörtschach am Wörthersee is located directly on the lakeshore and offers every luxury imaginable. The hotel park is a dream backdrop for wedding photos.
  • The luxurious and glamorous 5-star Falkensteiner Schlosshotel in Velden am Wörthersee organizes fairytale weddings.
  • The 'Alte Burg' in Gmünd , built in 1252, not only offers historical celebration options, but also has its own registry office.

Looking for a very special place to say yes?

Northeast of Gmünd - on the former Roman road - stands the " divided church " from the 15th century. On the right, eastern side of the street is the chancel with bell tower, opposite the church is the gallery with confessionals and seating. Both halves of the church are secured with solid railings. The entrances to the buildings are on the sides.

A year-round sensation is a wedding celebration on the Fellacheralm near Patergassen : The alpine village 'Seinerzeit' consists of numerous huts and its own lakes. It is located on a sunny plateau and offers a view of Carinthia's hilly Nockberge mountains. The bride and groom have the option of choosing between exclusive, rustic, traditional, exclusive, elegant and down-to-earth. Depending on the number of guests, the bride and groom can book the entire village. The wedding party experiences and enjoys pure alpine romance.

Typical wedding rituals exist around the globe.

Wearing something new, something old, something borrowed and something blue (often a blue garter or blue lingerie) on your wedding day is practiced worldwide - including in Carinthia. Austria's southernmost state maintains traditional customs both in the capital Klagenfurt and in rural areas:

Waking the bride:
The bride sleeps in her parents' house on her last night. On the wedding morning she is woken by gunfire or brass music. The noise drives away evil spirits and welcomes the new phase of life.

The Klause is extremely popular in Carinthia. The bride and groom are given solvable tasks on the way to the church. Only after successfully completing them is the path clear again and the toll 'paid'.

Sawing logs, kidnapping the bride, the midnight veil dance and paying for the bride's shoes with cents are popular customs and should not be missing at any Carinthian wedding.
