The ring -
a gift of affection
and connection

Every piece of jewelry has its own meaning and this is especially true for a ring. Anyone who wants to give one as a gift needs to know exactly what their relationship is to the person and not only decide between gold and silver, but also between opulent and subtle. However, it is not only women who are happy to receive a ring as a gift, but also men.

With its circular shape, a ring represents infinity. It has neither a beginning nor an end. For this reason, a wedding ring is primarily considered a symbol of eternal love and connection.

However, if you want to give a ring as a gift, you need one thing above all else: the ring size. This very personal jewelry gift should fit and be worn with joy. If the ring is meant to be a surprise but the ring size is unknown, there are a number of ways to find out easily.

By the way: In Germany, women's rings are most commonly sold in ring size 54, while for men the average ring size purchased is between 57 and 62.

But rings are not only the main symbol of a marriage, because in addition to the love between two people, a ring can also symbolize a deep and loyal friendship.

On what occasions can you give a ring as a gift?

  • Christmas
  • wedding day
  • wedding
  • engagement
  • Valentine's Day
  • Birthday

Christmas - A ring is very meaningful and if you give it as a gift for Christmas, it has an emotional value. You can give it to your sister or mother to be very happy with, but you can also find beautiful men's rings for your brother or father. In addition to newly designed and manufactured rings, an antique ring can also be a symbol of connection.

Wedding anniversary - If you are already married and are looking for a gift for your wedding anniversary, an eternity ring is the right choice. It is an ideal example of how you have captured your eternal love and loyalty in a piece of jewelry. The ring can also be set with diamonds or gemstones all around, for example, or you can give a memoire ring as an additional confirmation of your eternal love.

Wedding ceremony - The ring as a gift for the bride and the exchange of wedding rings is the highlight of every wedding ceremony, which seals the eternal bond of the vows. You can find rings for this in all kinds of designs and in gold, silver or platinum. They are often personalized with dates or sayings and both partners' rings are identical, thus connecting the lovers.

Engagement - The most beautiful gift and at the same time the most symbolic for a woman is undoubtedly the diamond ring as an engagement gift. It not only underlines the love for the partner, but also proves the goal of a wedding.

Valentine's Day - A "Toi et Moi" ring is one of the most romantic pieces of jewelry and is ideal for Valentine's Day . It is a ring that symbolizes the bond and is set with two jewelry or gemstones of the same size next to each other.

Birthday - On this day you can always give a ring to someone who is close to your heart. But since there are more and more couples who no longer get married in the traditional way to swear eternal love and loyalty, a so-called partner ring, which is no different from wedding rings, is also suitable here.

The ring in history

A ring is probably one of the oldest pieces of jewelry in human history. The pharaohs in Egypt were the first to use a ring to symbolize eternity. They realized that it has no beginning and no end and also reflects the shape of the moon and the sun.

Signet rings were often used, especially in ancient times, as they had the same meaning as a signature. In the Middle Ages, it was even common for the powerful and rich to wear signet rings with the coat of arms of the house or the personal symbol of the ruler. Men put these rings on brides at the wedding ceremony to make it public that they would share their property with their wife.

The oldest wedding rings found by archaeologists were made of mammoth ivory, but in ancient times they were forged from iron and copper - they symbolized modesty and loyalty.

It was not until the 2nd century AD that gold wedding rings became established, and from the 3rd and 4th centuries onwards they became more and more luxurious and showed off the wealth of the giver. During this period, the Fede ring came into fashion with two intertwined right hands representing friendship, partnership and the marriage contract. The hands rings were designed in gold and often carved as a gem in precious stones such as garnet, amethyst, onyx or carnelian. Later, the Romans began to carve their own portraits into the rings.

The ring as a symbol of power
Although the ring is considered a symbol of love and togetherness, it can also have other meanings such as power and faith.
Very special rings are the poison ring, the signet ring and the fisherman's ring. The fisherman's ring is the Pope's official ring, which is one of his very personal insignia.

Wedding ring – right or left?

In Germany and Austria, the wedding ring is traditionally and classically worn on the right ring finger. This is not common in many other countries (USA, Switzerland and southern countries), where it is worn on the left hand.

There are explanations and legends from ancient times for both ways of wearing a ring. The Greeks and Egyptians believed in an old legend that a vein from the left ring finger led directly to the heart. For this reason, many married couples in some countries still wear their wedding ring on the ring finger of their left hand. On the other hand, a Bible quote (Exodus 15.6) describes the right side of the finger as the "good and, above all, lucky side", which is why it is assumed that the wedding ring should be placed there.

Conclusion
There is no clear answer to the question many couples ask whether the wedding ring should be worn on the right or left. Everyone decides according to their country and culture. In Germany, at least, the trend has prevailed: engagement ring on the left - wedding ring on the right.
