Description wedding venue
On October 23, 1989, Captain Heinz-Dieter Kallbach managed to make a spectacular landing of a four-engine Interflug Ilyushin 62 long-distance aircraft on the 860 m long glider airfield in Stölln. This extraordinary aviation achievement was entered into the Guinness Book of Records. The aircraft is also affectionately called “Lady Agnes”, after the first name of Lilienthal’s wife.
A film shows you the landing of the “Lady” up close. There is a registry office in the rear of the aircraft and over 900 couples have already “taken off into marriage” here. Since 2012, an exhibition on the history of the GDR airline “INTERFLUG” has been on display.
The oldest airfield in the world is in Stölln. The small town in Havelland is closely linked to the history of aviation because Otto Lilienthal carried out his groundbreaking flight experiments here from 1893 to 1896. The German engineer studied the flight of storks and then built his first flying models. Lilienthal was the pioneer of flying and was the first person to conduct systematic flight experiments. In 1893, Otto Lilienthal achieved flights of up to 250 m on the Gollenberg in Stölln. Here he also managed to make a U-turn in the air.
He liked coming to the Rhinow region because he found ideal conditions there. However, on August 9, 1896, an accident occurred: a gust of wind unexpectedly caught his glider and Otto Lilienthal fell vertically from a height of about 17 m. He was immediately rushed by his helpers to the Bergmann Clinic in Berlin, where he died the following day from his severe spinal injuries, despite immediate surgery. Through the further development of its flight models and the beginning of motorization, aviation became what it is today.
