Thermal baths – a fascination for thousands of years

Water has always shaped human culture. The "elixir of life" has always been attractive - especially when it welled up from the earth warm or with a taste. The ancient Greeks worshipped water. The ancient Romans, however, achieved perfection in the construction of thermal baths and bathing facilities, building at least one thermal bath in every major city.

After the end of the Roman Empire, this culture was temporarily lost in Western Europe until the Habsburgs rediscovered the old healing springs and began to exploit them. Thermal baths were built in Baden, Heilbrunn and Gastein and became the meeting place for the who's who of the time. However, these were unaffordable for the general public and so-called peasant baths were created. People not only bathed in these, but also got married! The warm bath near Villach, for example, has survived to this day.

The First World War meant the temporary end of the thermal spa culture. It received an unexpected boost with the oil crisis of the 1970s. Oil drilling did not always just discover "black gold" but also new sources. This is how the Rogner Bad Blumau was created, for example, where instead of oil, 100 °C hot water was found at a depth of around 3,000 meters.
